Fund for the Future
Since Edward Kidder Graham taught UNC’s first journalism course in 1909, Carolina’s journalism program has continued to innovate. During the centennial year of journalism education, the school launched an ambitious new curriculum, converted its television studio into high definition and is expanding its global reach and forging new research partnerships to ensure that quality journalism thrives in the digital age. The school is looking toward the next century of journalism education.
The Fund for the Future ensures Carolina journalism’s tradition of innovation will continue. The fund supports ground-breaking multimedia projects, global experiences for students and student networking opportunities.
Gifts of $1,000 or more during the school’s centennial year (July 1, 2009 through June 30, 2010) qualify donors for Dean’s Circle recognition and a complimentary copy of Tom Bowers’ “Making News: One Hundred Years of Journalism and Mass Communication at Carolina.”

Unrestricted gifts are the school’s top priority. Making an unrestricted gift is a powerful way to help the school because the dean can put the gift to work immediately wherever the need is greatest. Unrestricted funds benefit students, faculty and programs and give the dean the flexibility to seize opportunities and support the innovative programs and outstanding people that make the school one of the best in the nation. The school didn’t reach its level of excellence through state funding alone, and it can’t continue to be the best without the support of alumni and friends.
Gifts for faculty support help attract, retain and support the nation’s best teachers and scholars in their disciplines and give them the resources they need for teaching and research. Gifts for professorships, course development, research support and travel for international exchanges and national professional meetings are particularly important to the school.
Gifts for student support include funds for undergraduate scholarships, graduate fellowships, internships, awards, study abroad and assistance for special writing and reporting projects.
Program support includes gifts to the school's specializations in advertising, electronic communication, news-editorial journalism, public relations and visual communication. Gifts help provide teaching materials, equipment, software and other needs.
Named professorships, funds and spaces
The state matches gifts for endowed professorships. Please contact the school's development office for additional information. A donor may choose to honor a family member, mentor, professor or friend by establishing a permanent named endowment with a gift of at least $20,000. Income from the fund supports an area of the school chosen by the donor. Naming opportunities ranging from $5,000 to $500,000 are available in Carroll Hall. These include the lobby, the auditorium, faculty offices and production rooms. Gifts for naming opportunities help maintain the facilities and replace equipment.
