Honorary Organizations

Phi Beta Kappa | Kappa Tau Alpha | Alpha Delta Sigma | Dean's List

The school's honorary organizations provide opportunities for further education, practical work experience and personal development.

Phi Beta Kappa

Students in the school are eligible for election to Phi Beta Kappa if they meet the following requirements:

1. Students must have completed at least 105 semester academic course hours, which include at least 45 semester hours of graded course work taken at UNC-Chapel Hill, with a quality-point average of at least 3.75. Credit hours earned under the PS/D+/D/F option or as credit by examination cannot count toward the 45-hour requirement. Effective Aug. 15, 2002, the minimum grade average required for selection will be 3.75.

2. Students must have completed at least 90 semester hours of course work in departments and curricula of the College of Arts and Sciences, or their equivalents accepted for transfer credit from other institutions.

The second criterion makes it virtually impossible for JOMC students to be selected to Phi Beta Kappa until their senior year. Students will participate in the appropriate initiation ceremony in either fall or spring.

Students who meet both criteria must apply for selection to Phi Beta Kappa by submitting transcripts for all college work to the University's Phi Beta Kappa office in Hamilton Hall,  CB 3195, by Jan. 28 for spring initiation and Sept. 15 for fall initiation.

Kappa Tau Alpha

Kappa Tau Alpha is a national society dedicated to the recognition and promotion of scholarship in the field of journalism. It is open to all individuals regardless of race, creed or sex. Scholarship is the single key to membership. The society was founded at the University of Missouri in 1910. The UNC chapter was founded in 1955 and was later named the Norval Neil Luxon Chapter to honor the dean of the school from 1953 to 1964. The invitation to join KTA is extended to undergraduate and graduate students who have placed in the top 10 percent of their class. Students are notified if they meet the requirements.

Alpha Delta Sigma

Alpha Delta Sigma is a national honorary organization for undergraduate students who have outstanding academic records in the study of advertising.

Dean's List

Undergraduate students are eligible for the Dean's List if, in a given semester, they earn either a 3.2 quality-point average while taking 15 hours of classes in which they receive letter-grade credit, or a 3.5 quality-point average while taking 12 to 14 hours of letter-grade credit.
