Chris Roush is founding director of the Carolina Business News Initiative, which provides training for professional journalists and students at UNC-Chapel Hill.
In 2010, he was named Journalism Teacher of the Year by the Scripps Howard Foundation and the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. The judges noted that Roush "has become the expert in business journalism -- not just at Chapel Hill, but throughout the country and even in other parts of the world." He has also been named the North Carolina Professor of the Year by Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and Council for Advancement and Support of Education.
He has extended his expertise internationally, having taught business journalism on five continents – Africa in 2006 and 2007; Europe in 2007, 2009 and 2011; South America in 2012 and Asia in 2012 – as well as across North America every year during the past decade.
His business journalism students now work throughout the industry at places such as CNBC, The Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg News, Reuters, the Financial Times, the business news desks of papers such as the Cleveland Plain Dealer and the Charlotte Observer, websites such as Business Insider, and American City Business Journals newspapers.
He is the author of two books about business journalism – "Show Me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" (second edition, 2010) and "Profits and Losses: Business Journalism and its Role in Society" (second edition, 2011). He is the co-author of "The SABEW Stylebook: 2,000 Business Terms Defined and Rated" (2012).
Roush has been quoted about business journalism in publications such as The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, USA Today and American Journalism Review and has written about business journalism in Columbia Journalism Review and American Journalism Review.
He blogs about business journalism at talkingbiznews.com, which won a Society of American Business Editors and Writers "Best in Business" award in March 2010. He has also created a website on the history of business journalism at bizjournalismhistory.org and a website for college students interested in business journalism at collegebizjournalism.org.
He is author or co-author of books about Home Depot (1999), Pacific Coast Feather Co. (2006), Alex Lee Inc. (2006) and Progress Energy (2009). He previously taught business journalism at Washington & Lee University and the University of Richmond.
