Professional development and training

Learning Center Academic Coaches offer a two-day Coach Approach Training for UNC faculty and staff. Participants learn and practice fundamental coaching skills that they can apply in their professional settings in order to enhance their interactions with students. The training is a mix of content delivery, coaching demonstrations and interactive practices, and incorporates proven strategies to improve participants’ learning, such as metacognition, self-testing and skill review.

Green Zone training is for faculty and staff who wish to learn more about the military affiliated student experience. Its goals are to train members of the Carolina community to know more about the issues and concerns faced by military affiliated students and to identify individuals who are available to assist this population. These individuals are not expected to be experts who can “solve problems.” They are individuals who can lend a sympathetic ear and help the student veteran identify and connect with the appropriate resources.

HAVEN (Helping Advocates for Violence Ending Now) is a collaboration between the Equal Opportunity & Compliance Office, the Carolina Women’s Center, the Office of the Dean of Students and Student Wellness. It provides students, faculty, staff and postdoctoral fellows with tools to be an ally to someone who has experienced sexual or interpersonal (relationship) violence or stalking. The three-hour training emphasizes the importance of listening, responding compassionately and connecting survivors to resources on campus and in the community.

The Office of Human Resources offers many opportunities for supervisors and managers to learn new skills and to develop existing skills. New supervisors are encouraged to start with the required trainings and follow up with the suggested courses. For more experienced supervisors and managers, there are many courses focusing on areas such as interpersonal competencies, organization development and performance management.

Safe Zone is a four-hour training program designed to create a network of allies for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer and allied (LGBTQIA) students. The desired goal for the Safe Zone program is ultimately to make the University community a safer and more supportive place for people of all sexual orientations, gender identities and gender expressions.

The University Leadership Education and Development (ULEAD) program develops highly skilled and motivated leaders to meet the challenges of higher education’s changing environment. Leadership development in the university setting is a collaborative process. Participants learn from world-renowned faculty, from outside experts and from each other. They gain the practical insight, knowledge, skills and confidence needed for leadership effectiveness, through classroom sessions, active assessments of leadership characteristics and participation in an intensive, practical project that addresses a major campus issue. Then they apply what they’ve learned in the real laboratory of the workplace – in the office the next morning.
